How do I motivate the child to learn?

I hear this question more often than any other. Help your child to develop a love for learning by encouraging him take the lead. Rather than looking at him as a vessel to be filled, look at him as a person who is reaching out towards what interests him.
·        Discover what interests your child
·        Ask a lot of questions
·        Give eye contact
·        Smile
Once you know what your child enjoys, use the information to anchor a lesson. Your 8 year old daughter loves butterflies. You take her to a nature center where butterflies are hovering over wild flowers. Observe and wonder. Ask open-ended questions and let your daughter share her perspective.

Follow up with a trip to the library where you can look at pictures of different butterflies and research answers to some of the questions that puzzled both of you earlier.

Fuel Your Child's Day Right!

Fuel Your Child's Day Right!
It’s Monday morning. You wake up late and rush out the door  After battling traffic, you finally get to work and you've got to run to make the morning meeting on time. You try to listen to your boss but your grumbling, churning stomach kills your concentration. You're convinced everyone can hear it, so you shrink back, embarrassed. The other voices in the room fade away now that your stomach's doing the talking. If only you'd eaten breakfast!
Too many students come to school hungry.
If you can't function effectively without breakfast, how can you expect your child to it? They sit in class, listening to the angry rumbles of their empty bellies as the teacher drones on about one thing or another.  Their food-starved brains simply cannot process what's going on. Even with adequate sleep and proper nutrition, school is still a demanding environment. Don’t challenge your child’s coping abilities by letting  them to go to school hungry.
Isn't junk food better than no food?
Not in the long run. The brain needs glucose and oxygen. The simple sugars in a doughnut, for example, flood the blood stream, giving your child a short-lived energy boost.  It also guarantees your child will be drooping by third period. For sustained energy and concentration, fuel your child's day with a breakfast consisting of complex carbohydrates and lean protein. You won't have to wait for parent teacher conferences to know you made the right decision. You'll also have a happier, more confident child.

Welcome

Opening Doors to the World of Learning

Center for Learning Abilities matches learning styles to learning needs. Everyone learns differently and can be taught to read, write, and spell if they are taught the way that they learn best. Therefore we provide specialized one-to-one instruction, which enables our students to develop effective reading, spelling, and writing skills. In addition, we offer enrichment activities, as well as consulting and advocating for students and their families. Ask us about our other services like adult ESL classes, small group instruction and peer tutoring.
