How do I motivate the child to learn?

I hear this question more often than any other. Help your child to develop a love for learning by encouraging him take the lead. Rather than looking at him as a vessel to be filled, look at him as a person who is reaching out towards what interests him.
·        Discover what interests your child
·        Ask a lot of questions
·        Give eye contact
·        Smile
Once you know what your child enjoys, use the information to anchor a lesson. Your 8 year old daughter loves butterflies. You take her to a nature center where butterflies are hovering over wild flowers. Observe and wonder. Ask open-ended questions and let your daughter share her perspective.

Follow up with a trip to the library where you can look at pictures of different butterflies and research answers to some of the questions that puzzled both of you earlier.
